Expected Study Hours - 1300 hours (including 20 hour Practicum)


Note - These are nominal hours - some students may be able to complete the course a quicker time-frame. Especially if you are familiar with concepts such as: teaching/training, a second language, bilingual, and work in an education and/or training environment. 

 

     APPLICATION PROCESS

  1. Decide which course is best for you

  2. Read the information below and the Student Handbook

  3. Complete an Application Form

  4. Wait for a Letter of Offer that will outline your fees and study obligations

  5. If you accept the conditions in your letter of offer, make your initial course payment in order to formally enrol

  6. Allow 14 days to process an application for enrolment

  7. Start on the first Monday of the NEXT Month! 

     SUBJECT OUTLINE AND UNIT SEQUENCE

Students must successfully complete the following:

  • 9 Core units

  • 5 Specialisation units

  • 20 hours of practical placement (including a minimum of 10 hours practice teaching)

  • TESGAE001 - Use the genre approach to teach English  

  • TESTEG001 - Teach English grammar

  • TESTSP001 - Teach spelling and pronunciation

  • TESTLE001 - Teach listening

  • TESTRE001 - Teach reading

  • TESTWE001 - Teach writing

  • TESDRF001 - Develop resource files*

 

     SPECIALISATION UNITS

  • TESAMT001 - Apply approaches and methods in TESOL

  • TESDTS001 - Design and teach ESL syllabus

  • TESAEL001 - Assess ESL learning 

  • TESEAP001 - Teach English for academic purposes

  • TESESP001 - Teach English for specific purposes

 

*TESCIE001 & TESDRF001 can be completed as standalone units without the requirement of a practicum - This Course has units which can only be competently achieved through holistic assessment, as some units build on the knowledge and skills developed through the training and assessment of other units.

TOTAL Course Nominal Hours = 1300

Successful completion of this course will require learners to engage in unsupervised activities which may include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Engagement with an ESL organisation for undertaking practical placement

  • Completing self-study to revise and reinforce areas of English language knowledge

  • Conducting research to gain up to date TESOL industry information

  • Personal study, additional reading and research associated with understanding the background of various cultures and learning styles

  • Familiarisation with the use of traditional English language resources such as Grammar and English Usage texts, lexicons and other aids used in the field of ESL teaching

  • Language and text analysis, grammar, spelling and pronunciation

  • Reading and research associated with current and/or cultural TESOL methodologies

  • Compilation of resources, activities, learning materials, etc. relating to an ESL syllabus

  • Familiarisation with various English proficiency tests

  • Observation of and interaction with experienced teachers and ESL learners in preparation for practice teaching

  • Preparation of lessons for practice teaching, with regards to teaching speaking, listening, reading, writing, English grammar, spelling and pronunciation

  • Compilation of the portfolio of documentation related to practice teaching including learning resources, reflections on teaching, observation notes and organisational documentation

  • Personal study associated with the chosen specific purpose for English (e.g. business, medicine, tourism, etc.)

  • Preparing an assessment item and implementing the assessment

  • Personal study associated with English for academic purposes

 

The time required to undertake these activities will vary greatly between students based on their experience. For example, those who completed their schooling in English speaking countries may be able to draw on their educational experience to quickly grasp concepts around teaching the English language; however, learners from non-English speaking backgrounds may need to do additional self-study. On average, the unsupervised activities listed above may equate to between 400 to 500 hours.

     ASSESSMENT 

The standard assessment methods and types of evidence collected throughout the course is as follows:

A.    Workbook Tasks, including;

  1. Short answer questions

  2. Case studies

  3. Matching / Multiple Choice questions

  4. Short Projects (e.g. developing lesson plans, collecting resources / activities)

 

B.    Practice Teaching Tasks, including;

  1. Observation of experienced teachers

  2. Portfolio (e.g. collection of lesson plans and associated activities / resources)

  3. Practical demonstration (e.g. delivering lessons, conducting activities)

 

C.    Practical Research Tasks, including;

  1. Research / analysis of real life case study

  2. Short answer questions

  3. Portfolio (e.g. collection of plans and associated resources)

     PRACTICUM 

Diploma of TESOL trainees will need to participate in a minimum of 20 hours of experience within an ESL classroom.

Students can start on the first Monday of any month*

All enrolments will be valid for 24 months from the date of confirmation of enrolment. 

QIE Recommends that students studying the course full-time allow 2 to 3 weeks of study per unit. 

     ENT4RY REQUIREMENTS 

It is imperative that students have knowledge and understanding of the English language and terms used in referring to it. The minimum educational standard required for entry to the Course is:

  • The standard of English that a person would demonstrate if they achieved a pass level or higher at the completion of Australian senior secondary school (Year 12).

 

Evidence of having this level of English ability may include:

  • Secondary School transcripts showing the required results in English

  • Completion of a Certificate III or higher level Course in the Australian Qualification Framework

  • A pass mark achieved in an English language proficiency test – either a standardiSed test, or a test produced specially for this purpose (see English proficiency tests below*)

  • Teachers, trainers, lecturers or other supervisors of education programs confirming English language competency

  • Enrolment in other courses of study requiring equivalent levels of English ability

     ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TESTS

For entry into the Diploma of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), a person from a non-English speaking background should have an English proficiency notionally equivalent to a minimum IELTS score of 6.0.

 

Other proficiency tests and associated scores that would indicate equivalent English proficiency may include, but not be limited to:

  • PTE Academic: 51 - 58

  • TOEIC: 750

  • TOEFL (paper): 550

  • TOEFL (CBT): 213

  • TOEFL(IBT): 79 - 80

  • Cambridge Exams: FCE-A

  • CSWE: IV

  • ISLPR: 3

Note - If you cannot provide evidence that you have the abilities (language, literacy and numeracy competence) to participate effectively in the course you will be asked to participate in an interview to confirm that you are able to effectively participate. If aptitude to complete studies with QIE is not evident, the college will issue an internal English Language Macro Skills Test to assess your Language, Literacy and Numeracy abilities.
